Lines of research
Lines of research
The research undertaken by Villa Arson’s teaching staff is now structured around five lines of enquiry, some of which are conducted in partnership with UniCA laboratories (the Sophia Antipolis Laboratory of Computer Science, Signals and Systems; and the Unité de Recherches Migrations et Société) and foreign institutions such as the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan.
La surface démange
Lead: Sophie Orlando (Villa Arson teacher) in collaboration with Christelle Alin (also Villa Arson)
La surface démange is a line of research into critical approaches to arts education. The namesake platform welcomes contributions on emancipatory forms of pedagogy from a variety of sources including higher education bodies in art and design, art centers and art activist networks. The platform has been accessible on the Villa Arson website since May 2024.
ECART — Resonating Ceramics
Lead: Frédéric Bauchet (Villa Arson)
Resonating Ceramics is an innovative teaching and research program led by four renowned European art and design schools with complementary specialisms which have been collaborating to develop contemporary ceramics since 2009 as part of the ECART network (European Ceramic Art and Research Team). The aim of Resonating Ceramics is to boost participating students’ skills as well as the teaching expertise of partner art and design schools in the field of the ceramic arts.
Partner institutions: the École nationale supérieure des arts visuels de La Cambre – Brussels; the Haute école d’art et de design (HEAD) – Geneva; the École supérieure d’Arts plastiques de la Ville de Monaco; Le Pavillon Bosio – Monaco; EKWC: Sundaymorning@ekwc – Tilburg (artist-in-residence and research center promoting the development of ceramics in art, design and architecture); Flux Laboratory – Geneva; L’Abri – Geneva.
The artworks developed from this program were the subject of an exhibition, Resonating Ceramics, held in summer 2023 in the gardens of the Villa Arson.
G-Art
Leads: Jean-Louis Paquelin (Villa Arson), Enrico Formenti (UniCA)
G-Art is a research group initiated in 2019 by Jean-Louis Paquelin (Villa Arson) and Enrico Formenti (Laboratoire I3S, UniCA). It proposes a transdisciplinary exploration — artistic and algorithmic — of various digital objects such as higher-order cellular automata, constrained tessellations, machine learning and genetic programming. Here the focus is on research through art, not research into art.
Les voies des images
Leads: Vittorio Parisi (Villa Arson), Matteo Treleani (UniCA)Les voies des images is an interdisciplinary research program launched in 2021 and reuniting students from Villa Arson and UniCA’s Master’s in Media and Digital Humanities. Its aim is to provide an overview of research and creation in the vast domain of images and their circulation. In 2023, Fabien Zocco presented his film Attack the Sun (2019), made in tandem with Gwendale Sartre.
TO DISPLAY THE DISPLAY
Leads: Vittorio Parisi (Villa Arson), Elvira Vannini (NABA), Vincenzo Estremo (NABA), Marcello Barison (Free University of Bozen-Bolzano) To Display the Display was a symposium held in October 2023 by NABA’s Center de recherche et d’innovation. It marked the beginning of a collaborative research program between NABA, the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano and Villa Arson. Guest speakers and participants tackled the theme of the display, arriving at a collective understanding and thus sketching a new horizon for research.
